South African application for UK visa
I swear this process changes every time I apply for a UK visa. They really don’t make it easy for South Africans ti travel these days. If you are applying for a visa for the UK in the next few months here are a few helpful links and a little checklist of admin you’ll need.
Step 1: Register an account at VISA4UK (You know the drill, basic details, email, password etc)
Step 2: Follow their online application process. This is pretty simple if you have all your paperwork with you. So before you register make sure to have the following at hand as you will need the details.
2.1) Your flight details.
2.2) Personal details like your monthly income and address.
2.3) Full address of whoever you will be staying with for the duration of your stay.
2.4) Details of your parents birth places
2.5) Your travel insurance details (If you paid for your tickets with a credit card you will get this from your bank)
2.6) Current Passport, Previous Passports and Previous visas (UK and other)
Great, now that you are swimming in red tape you are ready to go. Complete the online application and PRINT IT OUT. Print two copies just to be safe. You no longer need to take passport photos, all biometrics are done at the Applications Office.
Now that you have completed those steps and paid (My Visa cost R1400, this cost will differ on what type of visa you apply for)
Here is what you need to take with you:
- 3 months bank statements
- Letter of employment and letter that your work is aware of your trip and you are returning to a job
- 6 Months payslips
- 2 copies of your passport and old (UK) visas
- Letter of invitation (If you are staying with friends or family) (You don’t need this for hotels, just your booking)
- Print out of flights
- Copy of ID document/card
- Proof of travel insurance
- YOUR PRINTED ONLINE APPLICATION (Moerse important, don’t forget this one)
Once you have your appointment it’s a waiting game. My visa took roughly 2 weeks. Don’t be like me and wait till the last month to get it, just go do it and get it out of the way.
Good luck and happy travels.
