Museums of stones and ships.

Museums of stones and ships.

On Saturday we kidnapped Anje and Ryan and declared the day a DAY OF MUSEUMS. So much fun. I found a list of museums I had never even heard of and on top of the list was the SA Diamond museum. Who doesnt want to go to that?

The Diamond Museum is  run by Shaminsky Jewelers. Locatd on the second floor of the clock tower at the V&A waterfront. We rocked up in shorts and sandles and air dried hair. The tour guides wore suites. But were the most friendy bunch you have ever met. The tour says R50 per/p but we went in for free. I guess they felt like having guests. Not many people know of this place.

The tour starts with a very interesting brief history on diamonds. Something really cool we learnt was why a diamond on a playing card has the shape it does.(seeing most diamonds are triangular) The “Diamond” shape on a playing card is the natural shape of the stone. Who knew.

We learnt about who found the Cullinan and why SA keeps giving away all the largest things we mine or find. “Here’s diamond the size of a fist, so like, we even now?” We saw replicas of all the most famous diamonds in the world and drooled on them a little. When the tour was over the guide led us into the store. Holy balls so many shiny things. We got to look at a 3million rand rare pink diamnond in the My Girl cut under one of those magnafying thingies. So cool. The guide told us we are more than welcome to try anything on we want.

Anje and I contemplated what they would do if we swallowed a diamond. Figured they would cut me open to get it so deciced not to.

Many fotos were taken and an album shall be added soon.

Next stop was Houtbay Museum but we couldnt find it and decided it was a good day for a Chapmans drive. Stopped for photos at the top and acted like real tourists. After 3 years of nagging we finally took Oscar to the Naval Museum in Simons Town.

It was cute. But needed a guide. Far too much reading and things to play with and touch. Loads of cool things to read but it was a little too much reading. I know it makes me sound lazy but on holiday, who isnt?

There were these really tempting bells with big signs saying DO NOT RING. Anje rang them. Ryan rang them. Every 10 minutes we would hear them ring and giggle. Just allow people to ring the damn things. Its just a bel.

The thirst hit us and Kalk Bay’s Cape to Cuba was our watering hole. One of the best days spent with best friends.

{Sorry again for the horrible spelling, Tab and I still dont get eachother completely}
