Perhaps I am too basic and average. But I cannot fathom spending money on certain things before a trip. (We will be going to the UK in a few weeks so this is specifically centred around colder climate travels.
The Rand is going nowhere but down the drain and it is becoming more and more difficult to travel to Europe. The visas are getting more difficult to obtain and they are damn expensive. It’s a case of “Should I buy a return flight from Joburg to Cape Town or pay for my visa”
I am very lucky to have been able to visit the UK a number of times but the thrill of visiting will never fade. You name the mistake, I have made it. I once didn’t pack sneakers. Yeah, I went to London in PLAKKIES. I used to pack heavy and pack in the most unpractical way. I also used to blow money that could have been buying my train tickets, on silly things I thought I needed before travelling.
If you are looking to save some cash and blow it on your holiday rather before it, give these 5 things a second thought.
1.) A mani/pedicure
I do not see the point in having a set done for the purpose of travel. It’s one more thing to worry about. Because what do you do when one nail chips/cracks/comes off mid trip? Is there anything more annoying than a broken nail? I travel with bare nails but take two bottles of good quality polish (I use Essie) and a clipper with me. A classic red and a very pale nude cover all occasions. No mess no fuss.
2.) Travel sized products
WHY ARE YOU SPENDING MONEY ON SMALL STUFF? Just buy the empty travel containers from Clicks/Dischem and put your regular product in it. Why buy doubles just because they look cute.
3.) Trip to the hair salon
Look, if you look like a grot monster with outgrown roots and dry tips, yes, by all means, go get a chop. But why oh why do it specifically for a trip. Box dye your roots and go spend the money you saved on doing a tour you have always wanted to.
4.) Waxes/Hair removal
Even in the summer, the UK is cold. For that rare warm day with no clouds you can shave your legs. The rest you will be covered up.
5) New wardrobe
Pack staples. Things you wear multiple times and ways. Lugging around heavy luggage is a mistake I have made too many times. Pack light. Pack good socks and a warm coat and you are golden. Let’s be honest, you will end up doing a spot of shopping there anyway. No need to go buy a whole new wardrobe (for the wrong season you are coming back to) for just a few days. Light is key. OH and comfortable walking shoes. Supergas are my go-to.
BONUS 6.) A large camera
This one I always get flack for but I just cannot do it anymore. Instead of carrying around a massive SLR and lenses I like to snap on my phone. I am not into light settings and messing knobs before taking a shot. I see I shoot. A GOOD portable charge goes a long way with using your phone to double as a holiday camera. I also suggest immediately backing up the images to a dropbox. No mess no fuss with memory cards and more bits that can get lost. If you love your camera sure, take it. But do me a favour. At some point put it down and just take it in. Also, SLRs are heavy and I am lazy.
Do you have any tips on saving before a trip to the UK? Id love to hear them. Drop me a comment below.
