2016 Rio Olympics

Greenlydia - A South African Travel blog

My obsession with the Olympics started way before I fell in love with the grand opening ceremonies, the magnificent gymnastics or the nail biting swimming events. It didn’t even start with the summer Olympics. To be honest, it didn’t start with the Olympics at all.

It started with a movie. Once I can recite by heart. A classic.

Cool Runnings.

This movie is that one movie you watch that you never get tired of. If you haven’t seen it, it’s about a Jamaican Bobsled team that makes it into the Calgary Winter Olympics. This movie was the start of my love for doing things people said I couldn’t. When they walked out waving their Jamaican flag my little heart fell in love. The idea of the whole world coming together and competing WHILE cheering each other on, that is the dream is it not?

I know it sounds really Pagent-Queen of me but it makes me cry ever time I watch the Opening Ceremony.

The older I got the more I started to enjoy the sporting events. I love watching the table tennis, gymnastics, swimming and track events. (This coming from someone who doesn’t care for any sporting events, ever)

But let’s be honest, the real show is the opening and the closing of the games. The lighting of the fire. The theme song, the showmanship. I adore it all. I will stay up to whatever hour of the morning I must, to see it happen live.

To me, the ceremony to beat is still Athens 2004.

Here is a snippet.

Do yourself a favour and go watch the full one here. The show was spectacular and still makes me go “how did they do that” 12 years on.

Beijing was a disappointment (Mostly because SA wore CROCS) but the Brits in 2012 were so awful it nearly made me cry. (No one but them enjoyed it)

But Rio can really bring it home! I hope to see Carnival on steroids, colours and lights and fireworks like no other.

Are you a fan? Do you love the Olympics as much as I do? Drop a comment below with your favourite opening to date.

Actually I only watch the showjumping at the Olympics as I am a rider myself. I never watched the opening ceremony. Looks pretty impressive! I’m quite sure though that Brazil could beat Greece this year 😉
