I love following 52 week and 365-day challenges and I love cheering people on to stick to it. But more often than not those I follow start one on the 1st of Jan then drop out around the halfway mark. (Except Megan, who even posted in hospitals and planes, nothing stopped her from completing 365beauty tips it was bloody awesome) Others start drawing challenges and boy do they start strong. Then they get lazy and it all goes out the window.
I am many things, but lazy is not one of them. When Megan first gave me the idea for the project mid last year I recall my first reaction being “I am way too busy for that” but as the months passed the idea grew on me. And also the short way I found of sharing it.
I love Instagram. I love pictures and stories. Curated or raw, it is still like flipping through my favourite coffee table book. What better way to show off a place each week than with a photo and a quick story. So Instagram felt like the most natural place to share it.
Mid last year I was lucky enough to become somewhat of a regular on the early morning show on Cape Talk on Saturday mornings. When the producer and I spoke about what topics we could speak about this year I ran the #52places idea passed him and now I get to share more about my place of the week on the radio each week. How cool is that?
A little more about the project.
Firstly, Megan takes full credit for the concept and the name. Because she is a marketing machine. It’s a bit of a spin-off of her 52 faces where she shares a cool make-up look once a week.
I have always considered myself an average traveler. I do not travel for a living like some of the amazing travel bloggers out there. Nor do I have the opportunity to travel abroad as often as Id like. Some days my adventures are lived vicariously through Netflix documentaries on my couch, others I load up my people in the car to go find a natural rock pool to take a dip in. Sometimes even just going to Pick ‘n Pay is an adventure. Life is what you make of it. Even an average life can have extraordinary stories.
Sometimes the places I share are towns. Sometimes they will be museums or even a restaurant I enjoyed. Something out of the usual, something real.
I hope I can inspire a few people to realise you really don’t have to spend loads of money on island holidays or plane tickets to far off places to have a bit of an adventure. To have a story to tell around a dinner table. If you are keen to follow along, have a look at my Instagram @greenlydia and follow the hashtag #52places
